What was Welcome Week like for you?

It was a familiar and alien experience for me. I’d had a few years out and arrived at NTU as a 23 year-old, living in halls with lots of 18 and 19 year-olds. I embraced the club nights (familiar) and enjoyed the late nights and mid-week lie-ins (alien). But I also took part in the non-drinking activities and went ice skating with people from halls on one evening. I enjoyed the week a great deal but felt odd, too, trying to make friends in what was sometimes an intense environment.

What are your top tips for new students?

  • I threw myself into everything during Welcome. I went to a BBQ for non-traditional students (international, local, mature, etc) and met some interesting people. If you're living in or out of halls, go to the nights out (even if you're not a drinker) just to be a part of what is going on and to be a part of the usually hilarious stories these nights produce.
  • I'd make an effort to go out with people from halls or to throw yourself into the organised events for non-traditional students. You'll never have the opportunity again to spend an entire week making connections with people - don't waste it!

What events would you recommend?

  • I’d go to at least two or three of the club nights (even if you’re not a drinker). I enjoyed ice skating (even though I clutched onto the side of the rink for most of the night and did little skating).
  • Do activities that you feel comfortable doing and think about doing something outside of your comfort zone. The best thing you can do is make a fool of yourself; it’s a sure way to make friends.
