What was Welcome Week like for you?

“Scary! Living away from home and my family for the first time wasn’t easy and especially as someone who is very shy I wasn’t sure at all how I would get on. Everyone that I was living with liked going out to clubs, which wasn’t my thing at all. Luckily I managed to make friends through my course, going to other events during Welcome, and signing up for lots of societies at the Freshers’ Fair!”

What are your top tips for new students?

  • It’s okay to be different and say no to things you don’t want to do!
  • It’s fine if all the people you’ve met so far want to do one thing and you’d rather do something else; there is something available for everyone and you will meet new people at every event you go to.
  • It’s fine if you don’t know anybody; go along to the event anyway!

What events would you recommend?

  • Go to events where there is food available – it’s so much easier to talk to people if you have a conversation starter like “can you pass the chocolate please?” Plus, it’s very easy to forget to eat when you’re not used to having to cook for yourself so things like that can be useful.
  • Go to a sports club taster, even if you don’t think it’ll be for you. I accidentally joined the Equestrian Club because I was too scared to say no when someone asked me to and it was one of the best decisions I made.
  • Go to something like bowling – again it’s a really great way to meet people without having to think about what to talk about!
